Why should I be loyal or committed to an at-will company?

I started a trial hire position in September. I got sick with the flu in November and was out for 4 days. I then strained my back this past week and was out another 4 days. Now I'm being reprimanded for poor attendance. Why is perfect attendance expected from imperfect people?
