Is HIV considered an STD?

I was always taught that HIV is an STD. However, when I see birth control commercials, they say things like "the pill doesn't prevent against HIV or STDs. The word "or" leads me to believe that HIV is in a separate category than STDs. Maybe they should rephrase it and say something like "the pill doesn't prevent against HIV and other STDs" or "the pill doesn't prevent against any STDs. Anyhow, in my opinion, HIV is one of the scariest STDs out right now until something newer and scarier is discovered.
