Yeah that is a little strange. Maybe he thought you were coming on too strong by texting him immediately the next day? But from what you've described that doesn't seem to be the case. Some people are just socially awkward. He may have gotten cold feet because of nerves of something. I'd go in to see him and (only if you have time and an opportunity to do it without other people around) ask him what happened? And/or you could ask him if he's interested in dating you.
